Types of Bedding for Dairy Cattle
For years, dairy cattle stalls have traditionally used a variety of organic materials for bedding, such as cereal grain straw, corn stalks, and wood chips. However, most organic bedding supports bacterial growth because of substrate availability. Even sawdust, wood shavings, and chopped straw support coliform growth.
In recent years, the use of sand and other inorganic types of dairy cattle bedding has increased because they do not contain the nutrients required for bacterial growth. Also, these types of bedding have been rated high for udder health, cow cleanliness, and dairy cattle comfort.
Another alternative that is becoming increasingly popular is reclaimed manure solids. The material is made of about 70 percent water, but when spread onto a freestall mattress, dries quickly and provides a clean, comfortable bed for dairy cattle.
Researchers have shown that both inorganic materials and reclaimed manure solids offer satisfactory performance as bedding. And since reclaimed solids improve cow cleanliness and hock condition, and inorganics provide better bacteria control, a combination of both bedding materials may optimize performance.
